In 2004 we started clearing brush and undergrowth along Senator Highway. The entire West side of the highway was completed from Goldwater Lake to Sky-Y Camp. Since then, the brush has grown back and the east side has needed to still be treated.
Starting in the summer of 2010 the newest phase of work began along Senator Hwy. From June to October of this year, the work was being completed by our firefighters on their off time. Two workers were hired full time in October and will finish the project which is expected to continue through September of 2011.
The crew is clearing roughly 30 feet from the edge of the road. They are only removing undergrowth and are not removing any large diameter trees. Most material is being chipped on site.
The goals of this project include,
- Create a fire break along Senator Highway
- Create better sight visibility of wildlife.
- Create more sun exposure to aid in mitigating ice build up.
Our program mimicks a similar project that was completed along Highway 89a between Sedona and Flagstaff.
This particular program is funded through the ARRA.
